Baptized in the Psalms: The Forgotten Christian Roots of Canada

Many Canadians don’t know—or worse, ignore or despise—the beautiful connection between our national motto, A Mari usque ad Mare (“From Sea to Sea”), and the inspired words of Psalm 72: “May he have dominion from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth!” (Psalm 72:8)

Canada was not founded on secular, materialist, or pluralistic ideals. It was established upon Christian principles—grounded in the authority of Scripture and the moral order that flows from it.

You can still see echoes of this Christian foundation in the national anthem: “God keep our land glorious and free!”

And even in the Preamble to the Constitution Act, 1982: “Whereas Canada is founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of God and the rule of law…”

The Charter of Rights and Freedoms—though often framed in secular terms—still reflects deeply Christian values such as:

  • The dignity of every human being;

  • Freedom of conscience and religion;

  • Justice for all, including the poor and marginalized.

So it’s no surprise that there has been a concerted effort to rewrite Canadian history. Our media, government, universities, and public schools are not neutral—they actively attempt to erase our Christian heritage.

These institutions often claim to champion Indigenous voices, but sadly, they often use Indigenous narratives as a tool—not to uplift Indigenous people, but to paint a picture of Christian Canada as nothing more than oppressive colonialism. The goal is not healing, but deconstruction.

But we must not be deceived. The blessings we have long enjoyed in Canada—peace, justice, freedom, and prosperity—now fading before our eyes, are not the products of chance or modern ideologies. They are the fruit of generations shaped by Christianity, and we are now living off the crumbs of that legacy.

If we hope to preserve a nation where:

  • People of all ethnicities can live together in peace,

  • Life is protected and honoured,

  • Freedom of conscience is respected,

  • And justice is upheld for all.

Then we must keep Christianity at the center of our cultural life. Canada must remember—and return to—its once-public allegiance to Christ, which is now buried or denied.

For that to happen, we need unashamed Christians. We need bold families and faithful churches who are not embarrassed by the gospel, but who know with deep conviction: Every good thing we’ve inherited in this land has come from God.

Don’t be fooled—if Christ is not at the center, something else will be. And whatever replaces Him will be unjust, false, and ultimately destructive.

May God keep our land glorious and free!
