VOTING AS A CHRISTIAN (The 2025 Canadian Federal Election)

On one side, some Christians equate being a Christian with voting for a particular candidate or party. On the other side, some act as if there are no criteria at all for choosing a candidate.

It is childish, anachronistic, and dangerous to claim that Jesus would vote for candidate X or Y. He is the King above all power and authority in heaven and on earth both in this age and the one to come. His model of government is neither capitalist, socialist, nor democratic. The kingdom of God is a monarchy—though not in human terms—where Christ reigns eternally for God's glory and our good, with peace, justice, and love.

With a federal election approaching, how should we vote today, given our limited options? First, we must clearly understand that all authority comes from God and is, therefore, subject to Him. Regardless of the system of government, authorities are instituted by God to punish evil and promote what is good.

When we speak of good and evil, we do not rely on arbitrary standards but on God's Word. Therefore, we must evaluate the policies and worldviews of candidates according to biblical principles of good and evil. We must determine whether they seek to govern in submission to God or in rebellion against Him. If we align with those who rebel against God, we join in that rebellion and place ourselves under condemnation.

There are various acceptable forms of government, economic models, and policies, but none should, under the guise of love, affirm what God condemns or condemn what He commands. True love is fully obedient to God and governs according to His precepts.

As the election draws near, it is not our place to judge the hearts of men, but based on facts and policies, we must seek to make the wisest choice. We should strive daily to have our minds renewed so we can discern good from evil and follow God's will, which is good, perfect, and pleasing. And we must always remember: there will never be a perfect ruler until He comes and restores all things.

May God fill our hearts with love and hope for the second coming of Jesus Christ and give us wisdom from on high to vote in a way that honours Him in this next election.
