When we read Colossians 1:15-20, we have Apostle Paul giving us one of the most beautiful descriptions we have in the Bible of who Jesus Christ is.
"He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross." - Colossians 1:15-20
These verses are genuinely a mine of precious gems, but today, I want us to focus on one very encouraging aspect of this text. Jesus created everything visible or invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. And he is not just the creator of these things, but he is the sustainer of all these things. This Jesus is the head of the Church.
Jesus is the one who holds the church together and standing, and he is the one who holds us close to Himself. He is the sustainer of our salvation, individually and collectively. As R.C. Sproul says: "We are secure, not because we hold tightly to Jesus, but because he holds tightly to us."
Christ is supreme over all, but his supremacy is especially manifested in the church. And if we have Jesus as our head, what else do we need? If we are so intimately connected to the one in whom the fullness of God is pleased to dwell, what would we be lacking?
Friend, if you are a Christian, you can be assured that you have everything you need for an abundant life. Jesus is sufficient.
May God graciously open our eyes to see the unsearchable riches we have in Christ.
