Choosing the Good Portion

As we've been studying the letter to the Colossians, one very important theme in that letter is the importance of being filled and increasing in the knowledge of God. It's this "filling and increasing" that will enable us to live a life that is honouring and pleasing to God.

What happens many times, though, is that we get so busy with other things in life - that have their own importance - that we end up neglecting the most important ones. Let's quickly look at the

words of Jesus in Luke 10:38-42 as we reflect on this matter.

"Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her t

hen to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her." - Luke 10:38-42

You see here two types of people. One who is anxious and troubled about many things, and for this reason, not giving Jesus teachings attention. And the other person had chosen what Jesus defines as the good portion and the one thing necessary.

Jesus's teachings - the Word of God - are all we need in this life. And when we gather with our local church, especially when we sit under the teaching of the Word, and the Word of God is being faithfully exposed, it's not the preacher who is teaching, but it's Jesus himself through the mouth of the preacher.

There are so many things we can do as Christians, and that are somewhat profitable. But the most wise choice we can make is to have our minds filled with the knowledge of God. Everything else can wait. And the knowledge of God will set our path straight.

So, today, I want to invite you to be part of those who are always choosing the good portion! And let us be so filled with the word of God that it'd become the guide for our thoughts, feelings and actions.
